How to unhide the hidden peoples

We now have a clinic at the base in Miguel Aleman and it needs to be stocked with equipment and medicines. Dr. Aparicio is helping us and we are blessed that he is willing to offer his time and assistance to the Triqui. You can visit with him at his site. The following is an exert from a letter requesting help in findng one or more motor homes to serve as mobile medical clinics in Sonora.

It is impossible to import old motor homes and campers into Mexico but they can be brought down for 6 months and then taken out for maintenance and brought back again. Thankfully, we now have a pickup truck with a camper and the Watts kids are taking pre-med classes to assist in the medical mission.

If you would like to be a part of a team, buy one together with your team members and then we can work on staffing it and taking it to the villages.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter in support of Dr. Daniel Rivera´s request for help in obtaining a new or used motor home to convert into a mobile medical clinic. The clinic would allow Dr. Rivera's team to provide basic medical services to hundreds of thousands of low income to extremely poor families living in the rural communities that fall within his responsibility as Director of Health for the municipality of Hermosillo.

I have known Dr. Rivera for these past four years as a friend and the father of one of the outstanding students at my former junior high school here in Hermosillo. Over the years he and I have had a number of discussion about how we might help meet the educational and medical needs of the many low income families living in and around Hermosillo. I was delighted when he was appointed director of public health for the city. This is a case of the right man in the right place.

Unfortunately, Dr. Rivera assumed reponsibility for one of the most important offices in the city, but one that had been neglected during the last political administration. Daniel, encouraged by the new administration, has made heroic efforts to carry medical services to thousands of people who for various reasons have not had access to minimal services because of personal economic conditions of or those of their communities. As of this date, Dr. Rivera has established three new clinics in the most deprived of these areas, but he does not have economic resources or sufficient qualified personal to establish and maintain the number of sites that are actually needed. His solution is one or more mobile medical clinics that could be equipped with basic equipment and medications and that could move from community to community providing much needed services. The staff of the mobile clinic would provide basic medical attention and arrange for referral of special cases to facilities that are better equipped to help the patients.

My own projects and responsibilities have provided numerous opportunities for me to visit and observe the communities that Dr. Rivera wants to help. I can attest to the extent of the need. In some of these communities, families are at the very borderline of existing. It is sad to see the many young people and children living in such conditions. The need for basic health education and medical assistance is dramatic. The impact of the mobile clinic on the health, survival and chance for a better future would be tremendous. As a missionary, I am paralyzed by these conditions. We cannot hope to educate and train these people until they are reasonably healthy. Thus I find Dr. Rivera's planned assault on these intolerable conditions, not only desirable from the altruistic and humanitarian point of view, but a becessary prerequisite for my own group's attempt to offer education and training to these people.

Motor homes or RV's are not common in Mexico and the cost of a unit is far beyond the resources at Dr. Rivera's disposal. He has arranged for funds to furnish, maintain and staff the mobile clinic(s). But the basic need is for one or more vehicles that can be modified and equipped here in Mexico. I sincerely hope that you will be able to help Dr. Rivera and am grateful for your interest.
